Who would win in a struggle between all the Mac OS X cats and all the Linux animals?

I just hope they’ve backed up their data; this is about to get messy.

Here’s the layered tiff if you want to play around.. and the 1920×699 jpeg

EDIT; here is a 2.2MB .rar package of high-res desktop-backgrounds featuring the image for single and dual-screen setups as requested – Download Link!

Here is my best guess. Awesome picture.

Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Gecko/Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Jaguar

  2. taltos says:

    Awesome picture!
Russell, I think you have it nearly right, but you missed the hedgehog!
So: Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Gecko/Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog, Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Jaguar.

  3. taltos says:

although i wonder, does geeko, the suse chameleon feel like an outsider in the ubuntu-only group? :-P

  4. Russell says:

You are right. I thought the Duck was just throwing a pine cone or something else rather than a hedgehog. Oops.

  5. carlos says:

    agree with russel!
Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Gecko/Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Jaguar

  6. taltos says:

to be accurate, I think I have to revise again, I think jaguar and leopard have to trade places. it's ambiguous from the markings, but leos are normally smaller, but maybe that's too much reading science into a fun little game i have to admit… ;-) it's really hard to tell the difference…
So: Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog (bottom), Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Leopard.
could we have this in wallpaper sizes? :-)

  7. Christian says:

I learned a few new animal names!

Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Chameleon/Gecko, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog, Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Jaguar

  8. Russell says:

taltos, I thought the same thing about the leopard and jaguar, but I selected them because of their ears. It looked like the leopard had round ears and the jaguar had pointy ears, but I like your thinking.

  9. Ville says:

Cannot seem to find anything new apart from what has already been mentioned. So, I completely agree with Russel and taltos

Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog (bottom), Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Leopard.

  10. taltos says:

but then, the suspected jaguar has rounded ones, and the last animal has pointed ones like the easily identified snow leo, so it would seem to be a leo too, no?

  11. Christian says:

I tend to agree with taltos… seeing the tails would allow to really tell the difference! I think the markings on the Jaguar are a little bigger, so that would fit the 3. cat being a Jaguar better too.

Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Chameleon/Gecko, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog, Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Leopard

  12. Russell says:

taltos/Christian, I am going to have to agree with your analysis, especially after comparing the Leopard to the Snow Leopard.

  13. Christian says:

Russell, I don't find a page stating that ear shapes are real difference between the two. Maybe it's just for illustration purposes.

  14. Christian says:

Russell, Snow Leo <> Leo is a very good point!

  15. Red says:

[Linux]: (Top) Heron; (Left to Right) Ibex, Gibbon, Gecko/Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Lynx, Fawn (Deer), Jackalope, Eft (Newt); (Bottom) Hedgehog, Drake (Duck)

[Mac]: (Left to Right) Cheetah, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Jaguar; (Bottom) Puma, Panther

  16. Russell says:

I think the ear thing was something I messed up on when I saw a few random pictures of leopards/jaguars and not a real trait of each.

I'm surprised nobody has answered the initial question and turned this into an OS war. I really want Linux to win, but those cats look deadly and a few of the Linux animals really aren't pulling/grounded to pull. Although that is an unnaturally large badger helping out…

  17. Red says:

And thanks guys for finally teaching me how to differentiate Leopard from Jaguar from Cheetah, LOL!

Russell, taltos, Christian: I based my answers on their pattern: http://www.petsugar.com/Spot-Differences-Between-Leopards-Jaguars-Cheetahs-3271875

What confused me was that the ratio of the badger's size with that of the koala's was was big enough to make me doubt it's a badger at all!

  18. Mark says:

Hardy Heron, Intrepid Ibex, Suse Chameleon, Gutsy Gibbon, Breezy Badger, Karmic Koala, Wart Warthog, Hoary Hedgehog, Dapper Drake, Lucid Lynx, Feist Fawn, Jaunty Jackalope, Edgy Eft, Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Panther, Leopard

  19. Ville says:

Ubuntu and Mac OS X version numbers anyone?

    Ubuntu Linux: Intrepid Ibex – 8.10, Hardy Heron – 8.04, Gutsy Gibbon – 7.10, Breezy Badger – 5.10, Karmic Koala – 9.10, Warty Warthog – 4.10, Hoary Hedgehog – 5.04, Dapper Drake – 6.06, Lucid Lynx – 10.04, Feisty Fawn – 7.04, Jaunty Jackalope – 9.04, Edgy Eft – 6.10
SUSE LINUX: The Chameleon – ,
    Mac OS: (10.1) Cheetah, (10.1) Puma, (10.2) Jaguar, (10.6) Snow Leopard, (10.4) Tiger, (10.3) Panther, (10.5) Leopard

  20. taltos says:

Dire Badger, from Dungeons&Dragons, simple as that.. *gg*

  21. taltos says:

    this was to Red

  22. Alan says:

I think it's a pretty fair match, honestly. Aside from Lions, cats are notoriously bad at working as a team. One of them can't even stay awake. Typical.

  23. FunkyPenguin says:

For those stating Chameleon or Gecko for the openSUSE mascot – you are partially correct. It is in fact called a Geeko :-)

Ibex, Heron Gibbon, Geeko, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog, Drake, Lynx, Jackelope, Eft Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Panther, Tiger

  24. Ville says:

Ugh, type-o. Cheetah is of course v 10.0.

…and thanks guys. Certainly did not expect a qualified discourse on cat species tonight. Hat off!

  25. Red says:

Ok, I was supposed to change my answer (swap Jaguar and Leopard), but according to this http://www.bluelion.org/jaguar.htm, "The jaguar has an overall more muscular build. The body is compact, and the legs are more stocky than the more gracile leopard" so I'm sticking with my original one.

  26. carlos says:

confused… but jaguar has dots inside rounded black spots

    http://www.wildanimalfightclub.com/lion-fight-tiger-vs-gorilla-attacks/bid/23550/Jaguar-vs-Leopard

so I think Jaguar is the last one…

  27. Nicu Calcea says:

The Ubuntu guys – Heron on top;then Ibex, Gibbon, Gecko/Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Lynx, Fawn (Deer), Jackalope, Eft (Newt); Hedgehog at the bottom, Drake (Duck).

The Mc guys – Cheetah, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Jaguar, Puma, Panther.

  28. Tohveli says:

Linux: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Gecko/Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog, Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Jaguar.

  29. Conor says:

Dammit! You posted this during my lunch break. Otherwise I'd have been the first to comment. haha

For what it's worth, I don't follow MacOSX at all, but I've used everysingle one of the Linux animals since I became a full-time Linux user with Warty.

Just in case anyone made any mistakes above:

    [Linux]
The Hardy Heron is standing on top of the Intrepid Ibex.
Gutsy Gibbon and a poorly-scaled Suse Chameleon.
    Breezy Badger, Karmic Koala.
    Warty Warthog, Dapper Drake.
Lucid Lynx, Feisty (although she looks pretty timid) Fawn.
Finally, the Jaunty Jackalope and the Intrepid Ibex.
ALL are from Ubuntu except for the Suse Chameleon. No sign of the Maverick Meerkat. Perhaps he's still in his burrow until October.

    [MacOSx]
Half these guys look the same, but I'm going to go with:
Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Panther, Leopard.

The dots looked the same to me, so I based it on the size of the leopard being the same as the Snow Leopard. And also the ocelli on the back's of its ears.

  30. aleixosk says:

I also agree with taltos, the creatures are:
Ubuntu / SUSE: Ibex, Heron, Gibbon, Gecko/Chameleon, Badger, Koala, Warthog, Hedgehog, Duck/Drake (Bottom), Lynx, Fawn, Jackalope, Eft/Newt
Mac: Cheetah, Puma (Sleeping), Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tiger, Black Panther (Bottom), Jaguar.

FYI due to all the positive feedback we have had we will soon post a desktop background package of the image for single and dual setup high res monitors that you will be able to download.

    Nice!

If you've put "natty narwal" in it, we know for sure that osx cant win

  35. 24601 says:

I think the black cat on the Mac side is cheating… using a (somewhat) fixed structure almost as a pulley system

  42. Annie says:

I'm the artist for this cartoon and wow! so much great feedback! If I'd known how much research everyone would do I might have tried to be more scientifically accurate. I based the creatures off of a stack of Zoobooks I had in the basement and a vague memory that badgers were the biggest characters in the Redwall books. Thanks for playing and good luck!

  43. Bryan says:

@Marko… you could have at least changed the wording when you copy/paste. Regardless, if you win so do I because I was before you lol.

  44. Matt says:

Where the heck is Tux the Penguin? It says all the Linux animals so i would assume he would be in there somewhere….I guess thats what i get for assuming lol :P

  45. dana says:

Fantastic Art. Thank you so much

  46. zach4618 says:

Its pretty much Ibex vs. Tiger.

  47. Red says:

Hey Annie, nice one! I'm not sure what brief was given to you to work on, but it's one awesome art! The Snow Leopard had me LOL!

And oh, while the Mac cats have the muscle power, the Linux motley crew has the determination and tactics :)

  48. Rockn says:

I'm afraid the OSX cats have this one in the bag. They have some serious muscle power. In fact I'm sure that tiger is on roids. Can we get a urine test?

The ibex is putting in most of the effort on the Linux team. The fat badger maybe too but that koala is probably just making things worse. I see the heron has taken it upon himself to 'supervise' and is probably just pissing everyone off. Geeko probably has some pulling power but he looks a bit.. simple.

  49. neuromancer says:

So how is this 50GB going to work? idk how anyone can identify themselves as the one with the correct answer. I guess in case you need my user id for spideroak it's ail1020

  59. Daniel Larsson @ SpiderOak Inc says:

    @ALL

We are working on the 'contest rules' a little. Considering we did miss a few animals, we did not specify whether or not we needed answers in 'order' and we have had over 15.000 visitors to the post we are looking to reward each and every one that commented, tweeted and loved our picture and post so far and will present a 'solution' to this problem tomorrow (Thursday) that we hope will make everyone happy.

    Stay tuned!

  60. Daniel Larsson @ SpiderOak Inc says:

    @All + Bryan
Our idea from the beginning was to ask people to email in and lookup post-ip to the blog (as we dislike the 'enter your email' or 'post you username' idea for security reasons.

Now it seems almost more likely that we will offer a special price to the people who got it 'most correct' and also reward all the wonderful people who visited and showed their love for our 'art' by extending a much bigger 'price pool' and making 'everyone a winner'.

I am literally still working on a 'solution' to this pleasant problem and I hope that our announcement tomorrow (at some time, and in a new blog post) will provide this.

    My very best,
Daniel Larsson, Marketing Manager, SpiderOak Inc

  61. andy says:

what about this picture in 1920×1200 pix for single monitor?
I'm sure most people use only one monitor…

  62. vbuoc says:

    nice

  63. Red says:

@Daniel: Thanks for the desktop background files. I was really amused with the fact that 2 versions were created, depending on which group the user *wants* to win!

And if there's anything I'm really looking forward with announcement tomorrow, that is to finally settle which one is the Leopard and which one is the Jaguar, haha!

  64. Alex says:

    @Daniel

Working on a way to give a prize? I thought SpiderOak was the prize. It should be enough.

My prediction: Microsoft wins and no one, including Microsoft, is happy about it.

  65. Leon says:

…Then comes a single dinosaur with Windows logo on it and the animals will really start to sweat…

  66. Jared says:

Except the dinosaur would just be fossils for everyone to step on. They once ruled the earth, now we have to look under our feet to remember them. Loved the picture! Great idea.
