The Sync functionality allows you to easily create and manage any number of synchronized sets of folders - keeping the defined group of folders up to date in real-time. A Sync may exist between any two or more folders including two folders that exist as part of the same machine (e.g. between a desktop and an external hard-drive). More information on how to create and manage a Sync can be found in the 'Creating a Sync' section below.

When you first arrive to the Sync tab, you will notice there are no syncs currently listed. Please click on the 'New' button to get started. Once clicked, an intuitive wizard will guide you through the process. The various elements of a Sync include the Sync name, the description (optional), selecting the folders you would like to be synchronized together, and defining any data types that you would not like to synchronize within the selected folders in the form of wildcards (optional).

The Categories pane

Sync Characteristics - Located in the upper left corner of the Sync tab, the 'Sync Characteristics' lists the Sync name, Description, and Folders included within the Sync. Once there are a list of active Syncs running, you may click on any of them and the specific information will appear in the Sync Characteristics.

Creating a Sync - As stated previously, a Sync can be created between any number of folders across any number of devices within your SpiderOak Network. The Sync Wizard will guide you smoothly through the process, requesting you enter all of the information including the Sync name, description, selection of folders to include, and any specific data elements (in the form of wildcards) you wish not to synchronize within the selected folders. Once this information is entered and you click the 'Start Sync' button, SpiderOak will get to work combining the contents of the selected folders.

The SpiderOak Sync feature accomplishes two significant tasks - flexibility and security. Both are equally important and needed to make sure you can successfully move around important data, never forfeit your organized folder structure, and maintain a private environment throughout the process. We are able to accomplish this by giving you the power to select whichever folders you would like to include inside a Sync, easily defining those characteristics, and then automatically keeping the data flowing in the background.

To use an example, let's say you want to synchronize several folders of photos spread across your three different devices. And then let's say you would like to synchronize just your business documents between two of the devices. And then let's say you would like to synchronize your music between two other devices. All of this is possible using the Sync feature and you are able to keep the data separate by creating individual Syncs for each. Therefore, you do not have to synchronize everything all over again if you just add a photo to one of your machines - just that Sync will update and the others will remain unchanged. This not only saves both time and resources and but enables you to retain the organizational folder structure you have adopted across all of your devices while syncing them together at the same time.
