Millennials Care About Privacy After All

SpiderOak is passionate about privacy. If you are reading this, chances are you are passionate about privacy. But what about the Millennials? A Millennial is also defined as Generation Y for those generally born from the latter 1970s, or from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.

It’s been said that the Millennial Generation does not care about privacy. According to a recent survey by USC Annenberg, Millennials think differently and are smarter about making decisions when it comes to privacy.

This infographic explains:

  • 70% of Millennials would rather not give others access to their personal data or information.
  • Millennials use social media to keep in contact with friends and family.
  • 25% of Millennials do not mind sharing some information in exchange for relevant advertising.
  • 48% of Millennials use social media several times per day more than those 35 and older.
  • 56% of Millennials don’t mind sharing location with companies in order to receive coupons or deals for nearby businesses.
  • 51% of Millennials don’t mind sharing information with companies as long as they get something in return.

However, a good percentage of millennials, compared to those age 35 and older, are willing to give up some of their privacy only if they will benefit from giving up their personal information.

Are you a Millennial? What do you think about the survey? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

History of World Backup Day

A redditor originally suggested the idea of World Backup Day in March 2011. The reddit community quickly rallied with him to launch the first-ever backup “holiday.” Learn more by visiting worldbackupday.com.

Two years later, this day means even more to us as digital consumption increases and more hard drives fail each day. Today we want you to join us in not only acknowledging World Backup Day, but also recognizing how important it is for your personal peace of mind to make sure all of your data is backed up.

Why It Matters

Your hard drive may contain hundreds of thousands of files. We want to make sure your files are protected from hardware failures, accidents, theft, the apocalypse – anything. Be sure to take advantage of this deal today so you’re not an April fool. Share this discount with those you love so they can safely back up their data too. Do you run a business? Learn more about how your enterprise can backup its important data or sensitive client information with SpiderOak’s ‘Zero-Knowledge’ privacy encrypted backup.

Helpful Backup Tips

For extra precaution, here are some helpful backup tips for you to practice and share with your friends and family:

  • Compose your documents with frequent saves to your computer’s hard disk, and always consider that version to be your “original”
  • When you stop working on a project, or when you reach a point where your project needs extra protection, “back up” by saving the file(s) to removable media, usually flash drive.
  • Also store backups in a separate physical location.
  • The second time you create a backup of a document, make it on separate media from the first backup.
  • If you must do significant editing to a document, save it under a different name. Continue to use new names with each edition, being careful not to delete the old saves until you are 100% sure that you will never need them.
  • For extra protection, periodically print your documents.
  • If you have lots of software installed on your computer that would be time consuming to reinstall, consider doing a backup of the entire hard drive.
  • Test restoration. Sometimes computers and humans make mistakes, and sometimes things break.

Thanks for making this day fun, and your help spreading the word. Preempt tragedy and save your data with SpiderOak.

We’ve got your back(up).

Discount starts March 31 and ends April 1 at 11:59pm CST

No Excuses – Back up Your Data!

This week, we want to make sure you all know how important it is to keep your data backed up. As I mentioned on our World Backup Day post, it’s not only making backups that is important; It’s making sure that your backups actually work.

We generate an enormous amount of data in our personal and professional lives. From photos to videos, financial records to emails, documents to music – it would be devastating to lose this data. Sadly, it does happen. But you can prevent it.

Data backup is EASY to do and can save you a great amount of time as well as ensure that your data is secure in the case of disaster. However, we’ve heard a lot of excuses. It is time to put those excuses aside and back up your data TODAY.

Excuses, Excuses

“My computer won’t crash!” Of course you’ve had your computer for a while and haven’t had problems so far. Why worry about it now? This “it won’t happen to me” approach will haunt you later. Data backup is about protecting your data’s future. Look at it like an insurance policy.

“I’ve thought about it but just haven’t gotten around to doing it…” We are all busy. Work, family, friends… Why take time out of your day to maintain data backups? We can empathize with you on how daunting it may seem. However, today’s backup software manufacturers make it easy. Only a few steps are involved in most online backup solutions. With SpiderOak, you merely set it and forget it.

“I don’t know how to backup data.” Fear not. A lot of you understand how important it is, but you are just not sure where to start. You have a few options. Removable media (CDs and zip drives) were once a go-to option. This option just narrows the field a little. External hard drives would be an excellent start. Simply copy folders to your external hard drive and that is your first backup! We’d also recommend a cloud option. There are several that allow ease and flexibility.

Lack of knowledge or denial about the fragility of data storage media is the most common reason, which isn’t an excuse at all. Most people just don’t think about it. That is why we are here!

Do you have any stories to share, or excuses you have heard? We’d love to hear them! Here is a story we’d like to share with you from one of our users:

Also, please be sure to spread the word as we gear up towards World Backup Day, March 31st. Follow us on Twitter or Facebook or our blog for more news and deals.

Don’t be an April Fool. Participate in World Backup Day on 3/31

Stop for a second and think about this: if you were to wake up one morning and find that your computer would not boot up, what would you do? Unfortunately, many of you have probably experienced a similar tragedy.

Some facts:

  • A hard drive is a mechanical device, and as such is the most failure-prone component in your computer.
  • If you need to recover your data when the drive fails, you will probably have to pay hundreds of dollars to a recovery service, and there is no guarantee that your data will be fully recovered.
  • The real-world observed failure rate on hard drives is around 3%, and much worse under non-ideal conditions.
  • Accidents happen, whether it’s a coffee dumped on your laptop or a stuck delete key that sends an important folder to the trash without you noticing. Human error is one of the main culprits.
  • Laptops and cellphones are attractive targets for a thief.

Remember, it’s not only making backups that is important; It’s making sure that your backups actually work! Participate in World Backup Day (March 31) with us and start backing up your data with SpiderOak today, and we’ll make sure your data is safe so you’re not an April fool:

Affiliate Spotlight: CloudBackupReviews.com

This week we’ve re-launched our Affiliate Program and invite you to consider the possibilities and benefits. If you missed info on commission, merchant reputation and product service and relevancy, catch up here.

We have looked at a few of our affiliates who have been gracious enough to share their experience with the program and how it has changed their business. However, we have many more that help sell our industry-leading Zero-Knowledge product.

A few more Affiliate Members

Meet Eric from Cloud Backup Reviews

Backups are essential. With so many hard drives failing each year, the cloud continues to be one of the safest places for your data. Cloud Backup Reviews is a site to help you find the best backup solution that is right for you.

How long have you been an affiliate with SpiderOak?

RS: For about three and a half years now. My first email to the SpiderOak team was in June of 2009.

How has the SpiderOak affiliate program proved to be for you?

RS: It’s been a good program for me, but I’m really excited about the program moving to ShareASale. The network is a bit more standardized than the internal program was, and as an affiliate, I can get more information out of it. SpiderOak makes great backup software – leave the affiliate tracking to the experts at ShareASale :)

What are the benefits and challenges of being an affiliate?

RS: Well, the primary benefit is we get to make money, but affiliates are also some of the first to hear about new features, promotions, and get to try out beta software. Since affiliates like myself, who focus on the cloud backup industry, know this area so well, we’re great for giving feedback on new features.

What makes an affiliate program successful?

RS: An affiliate program is successful when both the merchant (ex: SpiderOak) and the affiliate (ex: me) treat each other honestly and fairly, as partners with a common goal. As soon as one party tries to take advantage of the other, the relationship falls apart.

What trends are you seeing with affiliate programs?

RS: Programs are moving away from up-front CPA (cost per acquisition) commissions, and more towards a percentage of the customer’s value over time. CPA models beg for fraud, as the merchant may pay out $40 on a $5 monthly subscription, so the affiliate will sign up hundreds of users (at $5, then collect $40) and cancel after a month. When affiliates send real, qualified traffic, everyone makes out better when taking into account the true value of the customer.

What are your goals this coming year?

RS: I’ve already made some changes to my Cloud Backup Reviews site, including all my reviews being driven from a central database and a new series which I hand-curate called, “This Week in Cloud Backups.” In it, I choose the most interesting topics from the industry, and publish it weekly.

What is something most people wouldn’t know about being an affiliate?

RS: I’m not at the beach, on my laptop. I’m at home, and it’s cold outside. Affiliate success doesn’t happen overnight, if at all. Anything you need to know about being a successful affiliate is available for free. Don’t keep buying those $37 infoproducts and expect to find a secret to success. The secret is: work hard, keep learning, and don’t give up.

You can be an affiliate too.

We’re excited to grow our Affiliate Program and push it to the next level. Be sure to check outOur Reseller Program and SIGN UP NOW. You can be the next great addition to the SpiderOak Affiliate Program. We look forward to working with you!

Meet Lee from Online Backup Deals

Backups are essential. There are a plethora of services that do many of the same things. Online Backup Deals is a site to help you find the best backup solution that is right for you.

How long have you been an affiliate with SpiderOak?

RS: Since your in house program started and then I moved over to the ShareASale program when it became available.

How you are enjoying the affiliate program?

RS: Overall it has been good. The move to ShareASale has been nice since there are more ways for me to create links to specific pages on the SpiderOak website. The additional tracking that is available through ShareASale has been nice as well to see what content has been working well and what has not.

How has the SpiderOak affiliate program proved to be for you?

RS: The SpiderOak program has been a good program to be a part of. It is one of my best programs on ShareASale and the payout is great. There are only a few programs that pay as much as SpiderOak does for paid accounts.

What are the benefits and challenges of being an affiliate?

RS: The benefit is always knowing that you referred people to a service that is good and will help them keep their files safe and secure. Of course making some extra money every month to do that is a nice bonus. Being an affiliate is also beneficial having young kids because I have more time to spend with them and can work on affiliate work when I have time.

Perhaps the biggest challenge I have, being a content affiliate, is coming up with new ways to talk about a service and making it interesting for readers.

What makes an affiliate program successful?

RS: There are a lot of things that make an affiliate program successful but I think it usually comes down to two essential things.

  1. A good product or service.
  2. A good affiliate manager to support the affiliates.

If a company has a great service it is easier to find ways to promote the service and talk about how it solves a problem that people might be having. Even if you have a good service that is easy to promote without a good affiliate manager to support the affiliates it can be hard to want to promote a service. SpiderOak has both, a good service to promote and an affiliate manager that stays on top of problems and is easy to reach for support.

What trends are you seeing with affiliate programs?

RS: There has been a trend of moving away from affiliate programs being run in house to being hosted on a network. The SpiderOak program is an example of that move. The networks are able to help companies find stronger affiliates and helps to provide more trust between the company and the affiliate. Nothing like referring people to a company as an affiliate and then the company not paying for those referrals. Using a network allows for more transparency between the company and the affiliate.

What are your goals this coming year?

RS: Pretty much the same as other years; Continue to make a website that helps people choose the right online backup solution.

What is something most people wouldn’t know about being an affiliate?

RS: Trying to explain to people what I do. A lot of people simply do not understand how affiliate marketing works or what it is. In the end I usually just end up telling people that I make websites for a living, it is just easier that way.

We’re excited to grow our Affiliate Program and push it to the next level. Check out Our Reseller Program and SIGN UP NOW. You can be the next great addition to the SpiderOak Affiliate Program. We look forward to working with you!

SpiderOak’s Cutest Tech Couples Results

A big thank you to everyone who participated in our cutest tech couples contest. We enjoyed everyone’s submissions! Valentines Day is about love and we love what our users do for us. Hope you had a lovely Valentines Day.

And with no further ado… The 3 winning people are as follows:

    • First place: Darran C.
    • Second Place: Kevin Y.
    • Third Place: Brandon A.

First place received 15 Facebook “Likes” and chose SpiderOak and Keepass because his life would be safe, secure and in Sync.

Second place chose Microsoft and Barnes & Noble. “Once adversaries in court yet now pushed into a marriage of convenience, the two find themselves meeting secretly in a quiet nook to discuss their future prospects as the wealthy yet socially awkward Microsoft finds itself in desperate need of more content for its nascent media ecosystem while the increasingly desperate B&N wistfully longs to return to its glory days, having been pushed aside from the spotlight by an ambitious and fiery Amazon.”

Third place chose Roku and Comcast. He says, “Roku was ahead of the curve in the streaming box revolution, but like Tivo, ultimately is going to lose out to those with bigger pockets. In the end, it will be Comcast’s desire (like it or not) to expand it’s exclusivity zone of content, streaming, and now news (NBC) that will make this the perfect marriage. The set-top box is the new battlefield for gated communities of content.”

But there is one more winner… YOU!

SpiderOak’s Cutest Tech Couples Contest

Ahh, lovebirds. You know the type. That sickeningly sweet pair featured in our favorite romantic comedies.

We at SpiderOak are not known for being matchmakers when it comes to romance, but we’d like to think we found the perfect match between you and your data. You and your data are quite the pair. Now we want to know your thoughts on future tech power couples.

The new power couples in tech – who do you think that would be?

We want you to look at all the companies today and let us know who you think would make the perfect couple and why. Let’s take Microsoft and Skype for example. Their eyes locked when discussing issues like CIO and enterprise IT. Skype was wooed on their first date under the Silicon Valley stars. Eventually, it became a match in heaven after they realized they had so much in common in LTE based networks and mobile trends. Who’s next?

Name Your Couple

Post your match on our Facebook page or on Twitter and tell us why you think your two picks would make a good love connection. Based on the number of Facebook ‘Likes,’ or retweets we’ll award first, second, and third place best matches. On Twitter, use the hashtag #SOLove with your submissions.

“How can we turn privacy into a tangible?”

In stride with 2013 as ‘The Year of Privacy’, SpiderOak launched a ‘Zero-Knowledge’ Privacy Ambassador (ZKPA) program.

We have nine ZKPAs from around the world who we will introduce you to in the coming weeks. Our ZKPAs will help inform and educate people on the importance of preserving privacy in everyday online life. Please lend them a warm welcome as they lead the change in advocating for privacy…

Meet Rob

Rob Simmons is a SpiderOak ZKPA hailing from St. Louis, MO. He has been working with computers professionally for the past 16 years. His day job includes management of NetApp, EMC, and Oracle disk and tape storage systems. His evenings and weekends include running Wycombe, LLC, (@WycombeLLC) which provides IT consulting solely to small businesses. While serving in the US Air Force he had the distinct honor of being stationed in an English sheep field. After his Honorable Discharge, Rob helped build a small telecom startup and obtained a Bachelor’s of Computer Science with an emphasis on Information Technology in 2009.

Why are you so passionate about privacy?

RS: We are in the ‘Share It All’ age. I think this is horrible. It is not necessary to share every aspect of your life, where you are this very moment, what you’re doing, where you’ve been, or what you plan. There are consequences for sharing it all. Namely, a complete loss of privacy. By sharing everything going on in your life, you give other people (sometimes malicious, sometimes not) the ability to rebroadcast your life any way they please without your permission.

Ensuring privacy is essential in navigating our online lives where every click we perform, every post we make, every picture we upload is replicated hundreds, maybe thousands of times. At that point a person has lost control of their privacy. It also lowers the excitement in meeting a new person, in making friends, or even developing a romantic relationship. The ability to learn something new about someone is eliminated when that person has given up his privacy. I’m passionate about privacy because I want all people to be able to selectively control the way their personal data is released.

What did you find most interesting about SpiderOak?

RS: Honestly, until the spring of 2012 I never heard of SpiderOak. Nor did I have any sort of backup solution for my computer. I got away with “winging it” for all these years. As part of my duties with my employer, I was tasked to research online cloud backup, sync, and recovery companies and their offerings. Among all companies and products I researched, not one came close to offering the critical level of digital security and personal privacy that SpiderOak offers. Others do a good job, but SpiderOak’s security structure is as near bulletproof as you can get. I was truly impressed. So impressed that I signed up for an account. After seeing how well SpiderOak worked for me I signed up my mother, two brothers, grandmother, grandfather, and my wife. My entire family is now a SpiderOak family.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see for advocating privacy?

RS: Privacy is not something that people actively think about. They think about seemingly more pressing items such as finances, car maintenance, home maintenance, work-related tasks, and family issues. These are all tangible items in their life. Things they experience, perform, or feel emotionally. Privacy, and especially online privacy, is an intangible item. How can we turn privacy into a tangible? Something a person can feel, touch, and understand? Once it’s turned into a tangible it will remain at the front of people’s minds along with all their other concerns.

Where do you see the online cloud industry in 5 years?

RS: It’s going to get bigger. Exponentially larger. Data center and data warehouse architects should be quite busy. I see a massive consolidation of disparate online items. Microsoft is going forth in a way I think will be the future. Microsoft is consolidating their desktop, mobile, and gaming platforms into one common system. And it’s all interfacing with Microsoft’s painfully non-private cloud storage: SkyDrive.

But it’s not just desktop, mobile, and gaming I see as part of the consolidation. I can see medical records, academic records, purchase histories, ebooks, music, accounts (online credentials), recorded VoIP calls, and who knows what else to be stored in a personal cloud. You could tell the doctor to just send your medical records to your personal SpiderOak storage. You’ll tell your VoIP service provider to record and send all calls to your SpiderOak storage. Receipts? Send it to storage. Ebook delivery? Not to a particular device, to storage. I think online cloud companies are going to have to look far ahead and see how they can become a person’s “personal storage” company that the user can access from any device, any location, at any time.

What do you hope to accomplish as a ZKPA?

RS: I’d like to get computer users to begin to think critically about their privacy and security of their personal files.

I’m sure many folks will brush off privacy with the statement they have nothing to hide. Well, truth be told, I don’t either. If you’ve nothing to hide, why close your drapes in the evening, why drop your blinds, and why close your outside door? People instinctively like their privacy even if they don’t know it. It just feels better knowing others aren’t looking in on you. Personal privacy is a natural thing for humans to enjoy. I want computer users to realize they should treat their files the same way. Make them private and share them only if they choose to do so. By stressing the ability users will have in selecting who has access to their files, I’ll be strengthening their freedom of choice. People would much rather be able to choose among a set of choices than none at all.

We are proud to have Rob aboard! If you have any questions for Rob, please feel free to write in the comments or find him on Twitter.

Next week, we’ll introduce another ZKPA…
