If you have a headache, or an unruly child, would you consider an ice-pick lobotomy? Not long ago back in the 1940s and early 1950s, those were only few of the many reasons people said “yes please!” to putting the ice-pick-through-the-eye-balls solution that spread like wildfire. The U.S. performed more ice pick lobotomies than any other country – between 40,000 and 50,000. The youngest “patient” was a 12-year-old.
Today, we know this is an awful solution. Thankfully this once common practice came to a grinding halt.
Only decades ago, smoking in planes, hospitals, classrooms, and in other public areas was the norm.
We finally realized as a society that was a huge health risk. Things since have changed drastically.
Today, on Data Privacy Day, I can’t help but wonder what we will think when we look back on this time in history. Even in five to 10 years, will we laugh at what we thought was acceptable today, how freely we shared our data, or blindly trusted the companies we interacted with each day? Why didn’t we do more to protect our “online possessions”?
“The right to be let alone” is my favorite description of privacy. Louis Brandeis used this description in a groundbreaking article he wrote for the Harvard Law Review in 1890. He helped shape the concept of the individual’s privacy to privacy.
