January 28 will be Data Privacy Day. Our Chief Technology Officer Jonathan Moore offered a perspective on privacy and security.
Have your kids had the chat with you yet? The one about internet safety? No? Here’s the deal: your teenagers are way more secure than your business. Not convinced? Here’s what your kids are doing (and you’re probably not doing):
YOUR KIDS DON’T RUN SERVERS; THEY USE SAAS PRODUCTS.
Sure, they might not know what SaaS is, and you might not think of Facebook, and FaceTime as SaaS; but by depending on these products your teenagers get to take advantage of the multi-million dollar security budgets behind these tools.
YOUR KIDS USE END-TO-END ENCRYPTED MESSAGING.
If there is a hack at WhatsApp, or if an Apple employee goes rogue, none of your teen’s communications will leak. No one will know what juicy gossip they might have been sharing. The nature of end-to-end encryption used in these apps mean that neither Facebook nor Apple has access to the content of their messages or videos.
The tools you are probably using today, like HipChat, Slack, and Box.com, all use encryption. Are they end-to-end encrypted? No. Staff and hackers who compromise them can get access to your records.
THEY ARE SOCIAL MEDIA AWARE
Your kid’s social media game is on point: they check their privacy setting and don’t accept friend requests from strangers. They use Snapchat because the images disappear, but they are savvy enough to know that image retention is still a possibility.
And email? Beyond responding to their teachers from a school email address, most teens don’t even use email. No email means a much smaller chance of a phishing or malware attack.
SPIDEROAK WAS FOUNDED ON THE IDEA THAT WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR DATA
Tens of thousands of people depend on SpiderOak ONE every day to protect them from failed hard drives, accidental deletion, and ransomware, but we can’t tell you what they store. Their data is secure from us, and from anyone else who might try and access it.
With Semaphor we bring the same end-to-end encryption to group chat and file sharing. We have enterprise features like escrow, retention, and LDAP, as well as full emoji support, mobile apps, and other features your employees love. We do this all with end-to-end encryption that lets you trust that we can’t leak (or even see!) your ideas and records.
Teenagers use secure tools to protect their social capital, the most important capital they have. It’s time we take a page out of their playbook and start using secure, encrypted tools to protect what’s most important to us.
